what to do? why?
Nice Introduction. Hope to learn how to contribute one of these days.
This was my first stab at an introduction. Seemed rather quick but I am going to look at the other material as well and maybe it will make better sense. Overall--great video.
Hi Steve,
thanks for the nice intro - I am impressed about your work - I will add some tracks from Japan and Thailand the next days.
Peter.
Good Intro
great introductory video. thanks!
Thank you Steve, a nice introduction.
Very impressive project
look's good to me.
Have tried watching the introduction video twice now ad get as far as the osmarender stuff about deal a few minutes in and this dialog appears. Once it come up I canot remove it from the screen and am unable to continue watching the video.
I am using MS Vista with IE8.
I should mention that thefeedback dialog will not go away with either the submit or the green X at the top right of the screen.

Excelent introduction. A lot of it, so I will need to pop back now and again. Thanks
Very good. When I start to use OSM and after I watch the video many times so that I get aquainted with OSM, I will be able to comment on what might be missing or not clearly defined.
Quick comments do not work on my PC though.
You probably don't really need feedback to know you've done a fab job, but I'll send it anyway.
First "showmedo" I've watched and it inspires me to do some also.
Take care, and I bid a great holiday season to you and your family and everyone else.
Cheers,
Rick.
I am going to use this to map out a battlefield for airsoft in Virginia, USA and I wanted to know how you would recommend I go about doing this. I am supposed to create a raster map and then upload it to a java application that will go onto web and gps enabled phones for a realtime battle network. What is the cheapest way to go about doing this since I do not have a gps unit of my own.
Thank you. I was only able to play it in the background while doing other things, but I saw it was comprehensive and will probably revisit it. It looks to be a very comprehensive mapping app.
Steve,
New to OpenStreetMap.org. Looking forward to getting involved. Your video helps to jump start my learning experience.
Ken
Many thanks for that overview!
Cheers Marc
interesting video, ? are there more details of how to record/upload around whole parts of were i live not on map , I am thinking of contributing but it may take some time
calm down a littel bit more. Not every one is understanding englisch perfectly! ;o)
Good, but too fast.
Begining OSM video very helpful overview.
Bit advanced for a beginner but will be extremely useful when up to speed a bit more. Might want to break it down into shorter segments, otherwise just fine.
Thank you, very helpful introduction to Streetmap
I just watched the 1st segment.
I appreciate the vid tutorial, it's a quick deliberate way to catch us up to speed on this site & its features.
I didn't appreciate the difference between the wiki forum and the blog, other than you don't use the blog..?
looking fwd to the next installment..
Steve,
It was very confusing tge first time I saw the video. I hope I will understand all the blah blah the 2nd or 3rd time. I want to use the open street maps in my Garmin enviroment.

Very informative. Saw some things that I would not normally investigate.
Informative intro video - thanks!
One question I'm left with is if there's any small way to make incremental contributions - like identifying street numbers with particular points on a road. (My comparison for Wikipedia is that I go in & edit the syntax & grammar of some existing pages, as I read them - a small contribution I can make just along the way.)
Video was informative, but very unprofessional! Comments like 'of that does not work, there is a bug' or 'what shall I do next' or 'what is that for' don't really inspire confidence.
Rehearse what you are going to do, make sure it works and keep the focus of the video on just one or two topics.
Am enjoying finding out about openstreetmap.org.
Hi Steve,
thanks for the introoduction. Was giving me an easy and quick view inside this subject.
Matt
Very helpful.
Keep up the good work.
Very helpful.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the video overview. Nice to get an idea of what's going on.
Rather poorly done. Too much jumping around. He kept dragging the window around, back and forth, and I couldn't see half of what he was talking about. A nervous presenter who seemed to want to "just get it over with."
Poor technique.
Even after signing up and logging in correctly the video won't play and I get the same error message.

Really good intro to the world of mapping. Well Done!
Basically not bad,
but the speed was too high.
Thanks
Stefan
Not quite what I was looking for, as I was looking for an introduction to editing (managed to find software for my HTC Hero to create GPX files, next step is updating the actual map data) but that didn't stop me from watching the whole video :-)
Thanks for the initiative, and thanks for all the good work you have put into it. You definitely get my vote!
Thanks SteveC for my first time evar introduction to Openstreetmap!
I'll definitly submit all my tracks from now on!
Thanks again!
What you do is really great work! I am a total newbie to GPS but I am digging myself through the info available here and elsewhere. When I am ready I wished to be able to participate and contribute my tracks etc to your project.
Thank you so much for making my biking trips much more enjoyable!
Juergen
Cheers for the walkthrough, awesome project too, I'm about to cycle around Australia so I should get some good traces up on my way around.
cheers
Kris
I hope a lot of people will help to compleate the map! I think it is a very good idea... Thank YOU
Just watched your introduction video... quite amazing the stats changes from your video (Feb 2008 I think) and now.
I now live in the States working for NY Utilities and OSM is mentioned more and more!
So much nicer maps than Google.
Nice job.
Nice to have open services and possibility to use maps for own needs. I hope organizes will coalite for funding service developement to different purposes, like nature science, etc.
Really usefull -thanks a lot!
Thanks Steve. Great intro to OSM.
Greetings from Venezuela. Openstreepmap is still in its infancy here but I know it will take off soon. Thanks for this great video!!!
really useful, thanks
t
thanks so much, steve and everyone! i look forward to learning how to do this to create accessibility maps for peeps with disses!
Very useful - although a lot to take in at one hit (might need to be hit a few times :-))
thanks.
A nice show. I was missing the comment about different browsers for PDA on Micorsoft mobile 6.2.
Thanks
Ronald
Good stuff - keep it up!
Great video
Great video, and great idea. I looking into ways to contribute to your project.
E
P.S. I'd also like to see videos on how best to contribute and edit routes.
too slow
Yep, nice. Good intro, thanks!
Hello,
I can't play "OpenStreetMap introduction (1/7) " video.
When I click on the icone, that doesn't work.
Can you give me some advices to export a map with format .osm?
Or better with format .img
Thank you for you support.
This is fantastic, and very interesting to me because where I came from (Syria) there is no digital map what so ever.
so I am looking forward to contribute to this project and my city.
and I will be needing all the help I can get.
sorry,
ich kann kein Englisch und komme hier nicht klar ...
Uloto
I just want to know how to add a street
well-done and informational
Good introduction, thanks
Screen is too wobbly and thus uncomfortable to follow visually at times though.
Your effort is truley appreciated thanks
Looks good, thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to make a video!
Very interesting project!
Handy to give a rough overview, but not structered.
I would have been helpful open all Tabs before, so no loading time. 17min is quite long.
Thanks anyway, I watched it :)
Video informative; however, things went too fast.
I, being from southeastern US ( used to hearing a lot of southern drawl) had trouble keeping up with the authors typical UK speech especially since he talked so fast.
I think I retained enough of the information that I, as a newbie, will be able to figure out how this all works.
Note: Show some quick comments will not stay open for me.
Great intro. I would like a similar talk on rastering and tiles etc.
I was looking for a beginners introduction. This started OK but I soon got lost when we left the maps and started talking about lots of things i had never heard of. i am looking to understand the basic application, examine and use the maps, how to contribute and what to do if mistakes are evident. I will continue searching!
Good introduction for overall openstreetmap, yet bit
difficult to follow by the non native English speaker
(I'm more familiar with American English). Looking
forward to see more....
Quite a useful and comprehensive (or so it seems to me as a newbie) introduction.
I did find it a little fast-paced at some points, having to try to follow the cursor, and occassionally the voice level drops.
Nevertheless, I greatly appreciate the tour and the info covered, and am looking forward to getting my feet wet.
Thanks.
Heard you on several podcasts. You spoke well there. Got on OSM and found some missing roads. There seem to be several tutorialsin a sequence, this being more of a guide to resources. I probably need the second or third to find out the best way to edit the map data for the road segment that's just missing. Someone nearby had already corrected in the past 2 weeks the erroneous labeling on a spur to this road.
Odds are I will contribute only little pieces from time to time. I should do more job hunting and less mapping, having been laid off a few months back. Volunteer work doesn't pay the home mortgage. If I can track down how to easily upload traces from my Garmin, then I'd be glad to submit them as byproducts of other activities.
good thus far,
Liked the intro video, informal and not perfect, which is good
Nice quick intro. Ta.
youre so good
Heard about on FLOSS Excellent project !! Will try helping in the USA
So far I don't have a comment since I haven't seen/heard the video yet. I'm hoping, when I close this, I will find the video waiting for me. Since I have a connection one level up from dial-up, I only heard and saw the video in snatches.
Now I've seen it and it is not what I expected and was hoping for. I thought it would be a tutorial on how to, for example, export a map from OSM to my Garmin nuvi. It really isn't intuitive for a newbie.
thanks for the introduction
Thanks for spending the time on making the intoductory video Steve - it is a great help to a newbie looking to get started with adding some mapping data to OpenStreetMap.
Simon
Great turorial!
I heard you on FLOSS weekly.
The street I live on isn't in many map sets. And a major bridge in my area that has been in service for almost a year is not either.
By the end of the day today, I intend on remedying both of these.
Thanks
Charlie
Nice to have a vocal intro from someone who knows the necessary high points.
I watched your intro to OpenStreetMap. Very nice!
Thanks for that. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Bev
Good presentation.
thanks for the instruction
Very nice intro, very helpful, thanks!
looking good
Usefull.
I was expecting a simple intro on how to upload GPS traces and edit them. On the other hand, its usefull to see all aspects of osm.
Useful info. Seems like a lot to get my head around. Thanks
Thanks for your invest in a public value in opposite to Google.
Hi Steve, this is nice work and helps gettng started with OSM. If you ever think of redoing it: for non native english speaking people the oberall speed i.e. flow of information is too quick. maybe you can do something like virtual chapters,, announcing what is comming next, context, where to find it (links), proceed with that chapter, then closing it with a brief sumary of what we have learned and whats coming next.
Cool intro, but could do with tidying up a tad.
Hello
is it possible to include a component in a web page ?
Is there anyway or a program to import a whole map from a Garmin compatible map? Which is produce by a group for free download and use. Thanks
Great video, thanks for the overview!
Good work!
Good work!
That is great!
That is great!
Nicely done ... thank you!
very helpfull
Please consider that also non-native English speakers look at your video and listen to your explanations. A bit slower and more clear might help them to understand what you talk about.
großartiges Programm
das Intro-Video von Steve hat Lust gemacht, damit zu arbeiten

Just found OSM! Should be adding some traces soon. Your intro was excellent. Keep up the good work.
Good intro to OpenStreetMap - perhaps a little too much info for the complete beginner like me, but I can always watch the video multiple times. Nice job!
Great work!
Saw today that NASA released some high resolution 3D-data of the earth.
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/20090629.html
But that would probably be more useful to the Marble project I guess.
thx for the video intro, going to look for project history next

Great introduction, nice presentation, too.
The introduction was about things that are quite intuititive. It didn't describe what it means to do mapping. I was expecting more.
Nice;
I need to be able to download an OSM, draw an intended route on the map, then download the 'trace' and (hopefully) map to my GPS,,, with the intent of being able to follow the "trace" line on the GPS while cycling (maps don't work well at 25mph)...
Your thoughts/suggestions...?

Two words, video editing. One more word, script.

The downloaded video is served with MIME type text/plain, which means the browser, correctly, tries to display it on-screen rather than offering to save it. This results in an Unhappy Browser (any browser which does anything else with it is a Bad Browser).
It must be served as video/something, and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Video wikipedia page gives a selection of MIME types to choose from.
This isn't a browser problem, but a server problem. Keep up the good work, and all that!
great!
Thanks Marcus
.
Fascinated so far. Nice easy presentation style.
I liked the OSM introductory video quite a lot.
Only the occasional high volume klicking was a bit irritating in the beginning :-)
Sorry, just started ...
Could be nice, but steve is talking too fast and not clearly enaough for non american people. Please, remeber that everybody in the world is not american.
Nizier
Very useful. Thanks !
not yet seen all
Pacing could be slower to let me absorb the info as it's presented. This was an intro to the site, not the project. More structure is needed. Perhaps just show a list of topics at the start so that I have a framework to hang the rest or the info provided on.
Also, after the first minute, I yelled "hold the !#$# screen still'. Really, It's like watching a video made by a 5 year old walking around with a camera. Keep the screen still while you're talking so I know where to look!
I am using Safari on Mac OS X 10.5.6 and could not see the video. In Firefox it works though.
Thanks for posting the video, it was really useful!
thanks... very interesting and clearly presented.
Nice overview of how to get help, thanks. I was looking for how to actually do some editing. That video ought to be out there, just this was the one I found first.
I found the intro to OSM video to be helpful and pleasantly organic. I look forward to interacting with the OSM community.
Cheers,
David
I'm new to OSM. Good, thorough, easy to follow intro. Thanks.
Very useful.. Pragmatic.. and inspiring... what People can do on their own initiative.. by Dad.. who passed away a year ago.. would have shed a tear of joy
very nice intro! thx!
Good video. A bit short but covers the subject.
The animation was very efficient to motivate people to watch.
A permanent display of the outline would be better to allow the viewer to keep track of the show.

Great video so far :) the only thing is that you should considder to use copression on your sound, so we could hear you better when you're speaking low.

Good job ...
Bravo
Yuor request cut into the video on Open Street Map on two occassions after only anout 1.5 minutes and I could not get back to the tutorial. Is it possible
Pretty cool !
Very useful, quick get started. For some reason, it abruptly stopped when you were going through the wiki. I was hoping to see more
Great! Thank you
a stunning learning experience just watching this video. tx
Your video was really a good overview of OSM, where to look for help, how to get info, etc. Thanks!
Allow me please a couple more sessions, possibly more until I digest all this new and instructive information. That will permit me to make a more thourough and accurate assessment inorder to provide honest feedback. I am truly amazed with the resources OpenStreetMap provides. The circuit of my relationship with OpenStreetMap has been unchained...
Good for first time overview of site functions. More on data collection would be nice.
Thanks for the introduction!
nice and verry helpfull short descriton
thanks! tomkae
looking forward to contributing map data in my area
this was a very good introduction to openstreetmaps it moved a good pace and was very informative. i now know how to use several of the features that I didn't know from just seeing the titles.
thanks.
haven't seen the video yet - seems like i have to respond B4 I see it :)

Great video, Steve and great service. I'm looking forward to helping out
Great idea for a tutorial topic.
I enjoyed the video, though it stopped and started intermittently. I Still have a lot to learn
I appreciate Steve's very casual style. Informative and entertaining

Thank you very much for your video! It was very helpfull. I could not find an instruction-video in german language. Probably its because of my bad english, but i could not understand some of your sentences, because you spoke a little bit to fast and not very clear. I will have to improve my english knowledge... Thank you very much!!
Video stops and starts intermittently. youtube occasionally does the same. I'll forego the tutorial and 'have a go' anyway.
Also, "This is Steve again..." is not much of an introduction, but I get the idea.
Feedback idea is a good one.
Otherwise, keep up the good work. :-)
Thanks for the video (it was slow on my end) having it available on YouTube would be helpful. (not sure if it already is)
Im using an eee pc so the screen is smaller.
Nice job man!
Showmedo is a bad place to host stuff though :<
1. The continuous panning about of the screen makes me nauseous. I had to look away for most of the presentation or become violently ill.
2. The presentation does a creditable job of describing the web site, but not a whole lot about actually contributing to the project other than "uploading a file".
3. I had to write this comment twice since the first time I neglected to include an e-mail as I wished to be anonymous. Unfortunately, there was no way to go back to the comment I edited after receiving the "you must enter an e-mail address" error page.
4. I congratulate you on this project and hope to be a significant contributor in my area!
Most important question: can a noob make money on the forex? => If you're lucky... You really do need to know about this stuff. Same goes for shares etc.
Hi guys,
I am new to this forum showmedo.com and hope that you can

I started this thread to speak about public usable web proxies:
Which are really anonymous?
Which can unblock facebook, myspace etc, in other words: are fresh ?
Which would you recommend?
Thanks for your help,
Dschibut
P.S.: In my land, the freedom of speech is somehow constrained, please give me a hint, if you have doubts about your recommendation.
know most of it before
but the blog was new to me
Hi Steve,
for me it was a bit hard to follow your video: I'm not a native speaker and the audio quality is not that good.
Kind regards,
Andreas
Hello Everybody
Just wanted to share my new experience.
If your system denies to start due to an error corresponding to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other important system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Simply boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot
Cheers,
Carl

Hi everybody
Just trapped on a little tool to slice website images.
Quick in preparing ready html from simple single-image site design.
Program is rather crappy and cheap (especially comparing to similar function in PhotoShop).
But there is a trick! Just look what books come as a bonus:
Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day
Web Design in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition
Webmaster in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition
etc...
I wonder how $270 priced books can be sold for just 20 dollars...
Anyway here's link: http://www.sliceimage.com/
Hope these books will help you as well.
Regards,
Mark
The video kept stopping to load data - this does not happen with eg "you tube". This, of course, may be my fault.
Very interested in the subject matter.
Ok, now I know how to use the networking features and that kind of stuff. But I still don't know what OpenStreetMap is! What have the GPS traces to do with anything, what do I do with tags? Is the map built to be a basis for one big map with all kinds of data, or is it ment to act as a basis to build on, whenever in need of a specific type of map? What is OSM for and how can anyone benefit from the content that is created?
Am I just stupid or should I have known this before an introductory video? I'm lost, even if I now know what I can find in the wiki and how can I send messages. But I doubt OSM is about parties and messages, right?
I have not yet registered but am interested in doing so.
What I am not sure of is whether I have the personal qualifications for the enterprise: i.e. experience, hardware and software. I could not find a simple text saying what is required. Do I need software or programming skills (I don't) but I can use macro editors (HTML).
So what I am worried about is the threshold of the learning curve: Where does it begin?
Hello everybody, my name is Damion, and I'm glad to join your conmunity,
and wish to assist as far as possible.
ooh, i'm feeling sick from all the panning around :S
Volume levels doe vary quite a bit
Apart from this, its a good intro for newbs.
Hi Steve - great first video!
I've been using OpenStreetMap as I'm based in Brighton, I enjoyed the 'launch' party we had late last year. Mikel Maron had huge maps printed up and the mayor came to speak (which was rather amusing, she clearly wasn't sure 'what it was all about' but she was terribly enthusiastic).
I didn't know about using 'shift' to drag a selection in the web interface, nor did I know about 'osmarander' - it is always cool to be shown new tricks.
Cheers and welcome to the site,
Ian.
Video published, thanks for contributing to ShowMeDo
