Hello - your Scribus Tutorial series by Dai has been a tremendous help to me, but I have a problem. Having put page numbers successfully on all the pages of a 48-page booklet, most of them are now covered up because I have put coloured overlays etc. on many of the pages. What can I do about this please? Is there a way of getting the page numbers to show through the coloured backgrounds?

Also is there a forum I could join in which I can ask this kind of question and/or find answers about producing a magazine in Scribus?

Hoping desperately to hear from you.

Thank you!

125. Bob Finlon Wed, 27 Jan 2010 05:59

Good intro!

Well done Dai. Nice easy introduction to the tool.

123. Chainsaws Sun, 24 Jan 2010 12:11

Really a good inroduction to Scribus. I hope the rest of your video tutorial will be just as excellent.

122. Jim Hunter Wed, 20 Jan 2010 00:31

great intro... on to the next session!

121. Rod Greenwood Wed, 13 Jan 2010 11:29

Well done! It is refreshing to have someone take the trouble to provide video instruction.

Excellent explanation of how Scribus works, thank you.

119. anonymous Tue, 05 Jan 2010 23:32

Great intro, Thanks a million!!!

118. anonymous Fri, 01 Jan 2010 22:00

Have previously used Pagemaker, but this looks just as good with the helpful tutorials.

117. anonymous Thu, 31 Dec 2009 09:00

first lesson on Scribus, first impression, great, gives me the impression that I will succeed in using this software.

thank you

116. anonymous Mon, 28 Dec 2009 14:39

Just what I needed. Many thanks.

115. anonymous Thu, 17 Dec 2009 16:33

Dai, thank you for the free and detailed lessons. Very helpful so far!

114. anonymous Sun, 13 Dec 2009 12:13

Good pace, mentions the important things and I feel able to start using scribus

113. anonymous Tue, 08 Dec 2009 12:19

Does the trick!

112. anonymous Mon, 07 Dec 2009 17:28

Thank you for your video on Scribus. Just watched the first one and thought it was very good. I will, no doubt, be watching the others. Its very nice of you to put on a video helping others. It has certianly helped me.

Mo.

111. anonymous Fri, 04 Dec 2009 13:26

Thanks, great tutorial!! I have written, and am just beginning to create a children's book from scratch for publishing myself. I am hoping that this program will help me do that. Thank you again!! Lyn

110. anonymous Thu, 03 Dec 2009 19:48

Good Introduction, I find the speed slow, could move quicker.

109. anonymous Sun, 29 Nov 2009 07:40

OK

108. anonymous Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:04

thnks for your work it´s a great help for me i saw just the first video but will continue through your lessons,.. all the best

107. anonymous Sun, 15 Nov 2009 16:23

I appreciate the instruction; but the beginning was very slow compared to the ending which glossed over the box, text, and image manipulation almost wordlessly! It was the latter half of the tutorial that showed--but did not adequately explain--the real work of the lesson.

106. anonymous Tue, 10 Nov 2009 12:22

Hi Dai!

Great work. I have just seen the first scribus tutorial yet, but it makes me want to watch the others, too. I'll give you some more feedback, when I've seen the other one's.

btw: the videos are linked from the german wikipedia, so it has been a natural choice for me.

Greetings

105. anonymous Mon, 09 Nov 2009 15:10

Thanks, this really made it easier for me to learn and use Scribus instead of more commercial (and expensive) programs!

104. anonymous Sat, 07 Nov 2009 19:36

Thanks Dai, that was a superb overview!

Cheers.

103. anonymous Fri, 06 Nov 2009 21:36

Hi!

I found your videos to be extremely useful. But I really miss some ho to do's on the advanced aspects of scribus.

102. anonymous Sun, 01 Nov 2009 15:51

Go on please !

101. anonymous Sat, 31 Oct 2009 09:57

thank you for taking your valuable time to do this for newbies such as myself. You make it easy to understand and are a good teacher. I have never had any formal training in anything like this and you make it seem so easy.

100. anonymous Sat, 17 Oct 2009 01:06

The first time through I just enjoyed listening to your voice and enjoying the sensation it produced, like someone softly brushing my hair. I'm Australian and can't identify your accent. Is it Scottish or Geordie? (You could make a fortune recording relaxation CDs.)

The second time through I found your explanation helpful and I'm now eager to download Scribus and play with it.

Sue

99. anonymous Sun, 11 Oct 2009 15:41

good job but speed it up a bit. It drags a little.

98. anonymous Mon, 05 Oct 2009 23:18

pretty good. It's easy to understand

97. anonymous Thu, 24 Sep 2009 05:12

Thank you. I have been trying to figure this out for a while. I am glad to find Show Me Do and I am thankful for your video. While I believe in open source, I find it difficult to work with. I still have not figured out how to open or install programs in Linux. But I am learning and working on it. Thank you again. KC

96. anonymous Thu, 17 Sep 2009 14:48

Thank you - very good help. If you want look at my website www.paraculture.org. I believe I need the tutorials you provide to publish a book called PARACULTURE. Since I am 75 years old I do not have much time to leave my input to the world.

Have a good life>

92. anonymous Wed, 09 Sep 2009 16:54

I really appreciate the time you have taken to help us learn the program from the ground up. I am used to Pagemaker and am hoping to find something to replace it.

91. anonymous Fri, 04 Sep 2009 11:12

For someone like me who knows NOTHING of computers, your lesson was really clear and simple, thanks!

90. anonymous Thu, 03 Sep 2009 06:29

Just great for a beginner like me!

It's already fantastic that a free program exists for publishing, but this tutorial is a perfect match to start understanding.

Thanks a lot!

89. anonymous Mon, 31 Aug 2009 12:15

GoodJob

Hello! For some time I've been trying to understand how to use Scribus - the written tutorials I found very confusing. On youtube I found a few tutorials that helped a bit; I got an Idea how to use it. But this series of 28 videos is truly helpful. Everything I need to know is right here. Your voice and attitude are pleasant to listen to, also. Today I downloaded them all but didn't comment on them as I wasn't signed up. So I just want to say Thank You. I will be using them.. Cheers : D..

87. anonymous Wed, 19 Aug 2009 13:21

Great video series. Not related, but awesome voice too. Great to listen to.

86. anonymous Sun, 16 Aug 2009 07:29

I purchased Scribus: The Official Manual, and this video is an excellent supplement to the manual. The video is a great overview, and now I'll go back to the manual and feel more comfortable using it.

Thank you.

85. anonymous Wed, 12 Aug 2009 16:26

Bravo!! On to the next vid. A million thanks!

84. anonymous Wed, 12 Aug 2009 12:03

80. anonymous Mon, 10 Aug 2009 10:02

good video..n audio

79. anonymous Sun, 09 Aug 2009 14:01

I saw the first video. It was very helpful. Thanks.

78. anonymous Tue, 04 Aug 2009 18:31

Thank you for doing this, it's very helpful. I came across the video from a link in Full Circle magazine. I started doing the tutorials from there. One thing I think would be really useful was if you could produce a pdf (or other document format) of all he lessons featured in full circle, as this would make it really handy for finding forgotten bits here and there. As it is one has to go through all the past issues of full circle to find the bit one is looking for. But otherwise, well done and do continue, please.

Sarah

77. anonymous Tue, 04 Aug 2009 08:28

Excellent. Thank you :)

76. anonymous Mon, 20 Jul 2009 05:08

Thanks anyway... your work is very helpful!!

This was very helpful for a beginner. I wish you had shown more slowly how to select a picture and size it to fit. Also, some help in placing text that I write for the space.

Thanks

26. anonymous Tue, 24 Mar 2009 14:03

good introduction

25. anonymous Tue, 24 Mar 2009 13:41

Thanks, the Scribus tutorial was very helpful - now I know what at least some of those windows are used for. And best of all, I learned how to find the right dialog box to do each task.

I've been using Scribus for a couple of years, for just the quick and dirty formatting. I've learned an amazing amount of information just from video one. So far I'm very thankful and impressed. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for this video on scribus. I am currently learning scribus and even thinking of writing a book on it since i think it is a brilliant program. Apart from the low volume I have no complain.

22. anonymous Mon, 24 Nov 2008 19:16

If the remaining tutorials are as good as this one I don't think I'll be using Publisher anymore. Thank you so much.

21. anonymous Fri, 31 Oct 2008 01:18

I have been commissioned to do a menu layout for a restaurant. So I need to get skilled in a desktop publishing suite fast. Because of the way I tend to learn I find your series excellent. Thanks for the hard work.

20. anonymous Mon, 27 Oct 2008 14:15

I like that you make emphasis in the fact that scribus is multiplatform

19. anonymous Wed, 15 Oct 2008 23:59

Be good to go one step back, and describe how to install the programme. Especially the Ghostscript stuff, please!

18. anonymous Sun, 05 Oct 2008 01:56

Thank you very much Dai for your beautiful lessons they have helped me very much. Thank for your effort and for your time.

17. anonymous Mon, 22 Sep 2008 17:28

Absolutely fantastic got me up and running with Scrubus VERY quickly. All set a just about the right pace and well presented. THANKS

Thanks for making these screencasts about Scribus. They have helped me get familiar with and understand Scribus more quickly than the official Scribus tutorial and documentation.

Review of Introduction to Scribus

Hi,

Thanks for your efforts. However, it is sooooo slooooow and was sending me to sleep by the monotone voice. There was no real enthusiasm and it sounded as though you were forcing yourself to do the video. Have a look at http://screencasters.heathenx.org/ to see how it should be done. Can I suggest that rather than go through what each of the dropdown menus contain wait until they are required before introducing them otherwise you swamp the user with information which they are likely to forget.

Regards

Hmm I am impressed. Sweden. Nice to see I have some influence some where.

7. anonymous Mon, 03 Dec 2007 05:42

I've been fiddling a bit with Scribus and have watched a few online tutorials. I found your Scribus introduction simultaneously too advanced and too basic. For example, I am familiar with things like paper sizes, but as to why I would make an object box as foundation for an image box was unclear until I saw that it kept the text from being too close to the image.

It reminded me a bit of a talented magician teaching an apprentice by merely doing a trick over and over again and saying, "See?"

But I DO appreciate you putting your how to videos out there and intend to watch some more and pick up tips that will help me work with Scribus with less frustration! Bless you!

6. anonymous Fri, 26 Oct 2007 11:57

ooh thanks I will have some more scribus tutorials coming soon. They will be in a slightly different look to these here but will contain the same sort of info which will help you and others get to grips with scribus.

5. anonymous Thu, 25 Oct 2007 22:02

Hey I really loved this tutorial. As a fledgling buisness owner I have been trying to design marketing materials on (gag me ) word perfect which is a huge headache. And usually learning any desktop publishing program takes so much trial and error to learn. This is great. I am looking foward to continuing my scribus education with you! And you have a wonderful voice!

Thanks Dai for this very informative and well presented video. Scribus looks like a really useful program!

3. anonymous Wed, 17 Oct 2007 15:27

Yes scribus does work well with inkscape and gimp

Follow up to my earlier comment:

I just looked up Scribus on Wikipedia, and it looks like Scribus can write PDF files (although it cannot import them). It will be interesting to see if Scribus works well with The Gimp and Inkscape.

Hi Dai,

I am looking forward to your subsequent videos. I use Vim for 90% of my text entry, but there are times when I need to do document layout. I am hoping that Scribus can take the place of MS Word.

Thanks for making this video.

Kudos and Thanks for Dai
