Your demonstrations of 7-zip saved me a lot of time and confusion, since the 7-zip help files do not tell you how to operate the program. Thanks for a great demo.

Helpful

presented in a very easy way to understand

dai! thank for sharing a part of your knowledge.. it helps a lot..

If you look at the movie in the dialog box that pops up choose ultra for compession level as in the movie. If it soes not compess then maybe waht you are trying to compress is as small as it can be and the extra size may be created by the zip file it self. Some times movies that are already compressed don/t compress well in a zip file.

how do i create a zip or other compressed file that actually makes the file SMALLER. i'm doing what you showed with a 229Meg file and the zip file is 230Megs. isn't this supposed to make it smaller!?

Yes, all the videos were created on Xp with the windows version of 7zip

Dear Dai

Thank you for this. 7 zip did not provide this essential information. I will give it a try.

No one else is giving this basic info. Great!

Can you do another video that shows us how to create the SFX file using command line options? The Help file talks about using a config file that can be used to create the sfx file.

I can't seem to figure out how to get this working. For example if I have c:\MyTestDB that has X number of database files and want to create a sfx that when executed will create the "MyTestDB" folder in c:\My Documents not on the root. The help file says to use "copy /b ..." but I can't get this working.

Thanks for the help and great videos!

perfect! I have been trying to do this for hours. The &z software is not very intuitive.

Thanks

excellent!!! and 7-zip way better than winzip

7-zip is a nice little program only been using it for a couple of months myself. Much better than winzip in my opinion.

Hi Dai,

Great series! Anyone who watches your videos has no excuse for not knowing how to use 7zip. I started using 7zip about the same time that I started to contribute to ShowMeDo, and found that it worked more reliably than WinZip.

Ah, so that's how you create 7z SFX's, thanks. I thought it had something to do with another program (I never noticed the option there).

Educating the Open-source Community With Showmedo

Although as important as the software it supports, education and documentation are relatively neglected in the Open-source world. Coders love to code, and explaining how best to use or improve the software tends to be deferred or even sidelined.

At Showmedo we believe the community can play a vital role here and also say thanks for the tools and software that make our lives easier. If you have a piece of software you love or a programming langugage you are enthusiastic about, why not make a screencast showing others how to use it? All the stuff you wish you'd been told, the tips, tricks, insights that would have saved you time and frustration.

Screencasting is easier than you think, and we're happy to help you. You can emailus for advice or just use some of the how-to screencasts on the site. This screencasting learning-pathis a good place to start.

Kudos and Thanks for Dai
