Hey man thanks for this tutorial. I really needed it because I do a lot of uploading which involves using 7zip and I am supplied with folders that need to be compressed. The problem was the people who were supplying me with the folder didn't know how to use such programs.

I added a link to this on my website and on a forum topic.

I think he made an honest effort. He seems to care about what he's doing. Probably more detailed than the stateside 20 somethings. Also refreshed my memory to click the file and choose 7 zip there. So he did it. Saw an article in Wall Street Journal about difficulties of businesses saving and transmitting job how to's to the next generation. Also saw a software tester comment that most of what he tested was not so good. So it's hard to be an effective teacher

I did try this but it keeps coming up with the same size :(

I compressed a 100MB file using 7zip exactly the same method as you did and it only compressed it to 99.4MB :( whats wrong with this?

50. anonymous Sat, 19 Sep 2009 06:20

Hi Dai

You did a great job but buggered if i can get it to work.

It all seems to BUT when i go to email it it still says it is 10MB is it the same if you are trying to compress a PDF file?

Thanks in advance

Michelle

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I did not have a clue how to use 7 zip. It was great I could keep stopping and make notes.

19. anonymous Fri, 15 May 2009 06:09

Thank you so much for this tutorial. My son's friend downloaded the 7 zip. I did not have a clue what is was for and how to use it. The video took me through it step by step. It was great I could keep stopping the video because I had to take notes. Bad memory I'm afraid comes with age.

I will keep doing this until I know how to do it without notes.

Thanks

Hello to you...

Just a quick note in appreciation of your instructional videos on 7-Zip

- very helpful!

Alan

Thanks so much. This was very, very helpful.

10. anonymous Tue, 17 Feb 2009 15:10

Did not say how to re-open the 7-zip file.

9. anonymous Mon, 23 Jun 2008 16:42

Okay...what do I do, when the video is too big, still, and I split it (thinking that would help), and then I e-mailed it to myself, in all these different parts, then I tried to open the parts in my e-mail, and I don't have a program to open it. Dear Lord, how the heck to I e-mail a video? I've done everything that you said.

Thanks

make sure on the compression level choose ultra. If your files do not compress any more then they are not going to. They have compressed as as they can and, that's the smallest files size you can get.

7. anonymous Tue, 08 Apr 2008 05:35

Everytime I tried this the program spit out a file that was only like 200kb smaller. It need drop the files by MBs

6. anonymous Sun, 23 Sep 2007 03:36

Dai, just to let you know I've posted a message about your series in the 7-zip forum:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4453741

Ian.

Very nice series, 7zip is a great free archive manager that can handle a lot of file formats

If you can Ian that would be great.

Hi David, I've just published your 7zip series, all the videos look great - good job :-)

Would you like me to try to get links on the 7zip homepage, or do you have some publicity covered for this series already?

Ian.

Educating the Open-source Community With Showmedo

Although as important as the software it supports, education and documentation are relatively neglected in the Open-source world. Coders love to code, and explaining how best to use or improve the software tends to be deferred or even sidelined.

At Showmedo we believe the community can play a vital role here and also say thanks for the tools and software that make our lives easier. If you have a piece of software you love or a programming langugage you are enthusiastic about, why not make a screencast showing others how to use it? All the stuff you wish you'd been told, the tips, tricks, insights that would have saved you time and frustration.

Screencasting is easier than you think, and we're happy to help you. You can emailus for advice or just use some of the how-to screencasts on the site. This screencasting learning-pathis a good place to start.

Kudos and Thanks for Dai
