Making use of Samba's implementation of SMB, this video shows how to enable simple file sharing on a local area network. This involves enabling the needed services in Yast, and setting up the shared directories with a web browser utility called swat.

Bruce's tutorials are very professional. I know I can come here without the slightest question of the accuracy of his instructions. A man of great patience, is reflected particularly in the audio components. Anyone who works with Linux has a high threshold for frustration, and Bruce's voice is very calming and respectful of that fact.

I need a tutorial on getting Totem or one of the other media players to play proprietary DVDs. I'm considering installing VirtualBox on one of my systems and then playing the movies within a Windows guest OS, but it seems likely that openSuSE 11.1 takes me within a few lines of instruction of accomplishing my goal without all that.

Thanks for keeping on keeping on.

unfortunately, i could not successfully enable file sharing. smbd will not start. maybe because i entered my Active Directory domain name instead of workgroup name? How do I share it and use windows domain authentication for the share access? How do I assign rights?

20. anonymous Thu, 07 May 2009 09:32

I'm using Novell SLES so the interface is a bit different, but I will try to follow the direction. Wish me luck!

19. anonymous Mon, 20 Apr 2009 10:25

17. anonymous Fri, 17 Apr 2009 18:17

No doubt, the video was good one, but we need to learn these things on command line.

16. anonymous Tue, 14 Apr 2009 04:11

Seems simple enough. Have never attempted before. Running Fedora 10. Will see how it goes.

If you happen to have a video based upon Fedora 10, that would be great!

Educating the Open-source Community With Showmedo

Although as important as the software it supports, education and documentation are relatively neglected in the Open-source world. Coders love to code, and explaining how best to use or improve the software tends to be deferred or even sidelined.

At Showmedo we believe the community can play a vital role here and also say thanks for the tools and software that make our lives easier. If you have a piece of software you love or a programming langugage you are enthusiastic about, why not make a screencast showing others how to use it? All the stuff you wish you'd been told, the tips, tricks, insights that would have saved you time and frustration.

Screencasting is easier than you think, and we're happy to help you. You can emailus for advice or just use some of the how-to screencasts on the site. This screencasting learning-pathis a good place to start.

Kudos and Thanks for Bruce
