1 - Overview of Boa Constructor and How to Get It [ID:1038] (1/9)

in series: Introduction to Boa Constructor

(Showmedo is undergoing major changes. To report any problems viewing the videos please email us and include browser and OS specifics. Cheers - Kyran.)

A basic introduction to the Boa Constructor IDE/visual GUI builder for wxPython. Describes what it can do and how to get the most recent version up and running on your computer. In this series I am using Boa 0.6.1 with wxPython and Python 2.5, running on Windows XP (see below for issues with Ubuntu; I have not tested it on Mac).

Please note: for users running Boa on Mac or Linux, should use the .zip (source) download instead of the win32 installer. I have also experienced some problems running Boa on 64 bit Ubuntu 8.10. See this reply for a number of issues I have just identified with that platform:

wow, i managed to download. After failing to download Python Card and some other trouble, it looked like this is going to be another mishap. , but ( !!! ) , folder site-packages showed up all the sudden under python 2.6/Lib, it was not there after download and install, i opened IDLE meantime, did this do the trick ?

Its very frustrating these download efforts for beginners, maybe you could look into the mather and warn my fellow rookies, and big,big thanks for these lovely vid tuts, im gonna get cracking now ( @ 2.49 AM) :)

Just viewed the first video on Boa Constructor. I thought it well done and I was glad that you did it on XP. I am full time Ubuntu user but I still have XP dual booted with Ubuntu 9.04.

I first met Boa Constructor in Full Circle Magazine and found the tutorial a little confusing but good never the less. Boa did not quite respond in some ways as I had expected but I was able to figure out what was happening.

I use Ubuntu full time but I will be repeating the lessons on XP, the more practice the better and also I will learn how to transfer my programs to the windows platform.

Great intro. Lots of good info about choosing the package type from sourceforge. Good reference for CVS.

Presentation style is relaxed. Commentator's voice is pleasant to the ear. Well prepared delivery (no umms', ahh's, stammering). Very professional.

Cleverly patched voice over there! It would be nice if these videos had cut/paste resource files to go along with the content ...

Very nice introductory video. You went thru the steps without assuming knowledge on the part of your viewers that they they might not have. That is a great asset, which seems to be lacking on the web, when doing tutorials.

Showmedo is a peer-produced video-tutorials and screencasts site for free and open-source software (FOSS)- with the exception of some club videos, the large majority are free to watch and download.

Educating the Open-source Community With Showmedo

Although as important as the software it supports, education and documentation are relatively neglected in the Open-source world. Coders love to code, and explaining how best to use or improve the software tends to be deferred or even sidelined.

At Showmedo we believe the community can play a vital role here and also say thanks for the tools and software that make our lives easier. If you have a piece of software you love or a programming langugage you are enthusiastic about, why not make a screencast showing others how to use it? All the stuff you wish you'd been told, the tips, tricks, insights that would have saved you time and frustration.

Screencasting is easier than you think, and we're happy to help you. You can emailus for advice or just use some of the how-to screencasts on the site. This screencasting learning-pathis a good place to start.

Kudos and Thanks for cmpython
