Using Samba to Share Network Files and Printers [ID:019]

a series of video-tutorials by Bruce Cadieux

This series shows how to share files and printers with other Linux and Windows PCs using the open-source Samba software suite.

Note: Bruce uses SUSE Linux and these tutorials done on that distribution. File names and paths to system files may be different in other distributions. If not using SUSE, check the locations of your system directories. Equivalent tools to those found in YaST are available in other distributions.

Video Tutorials

1. Network File-sharing Tutorial

Making use of Samba's implementation of SMB, this video shows how to enable simple file sharing on a local area network. This involves enabling the needed services in Yast, and setting up the shared directories with a web browser utility called swat.

2. Connecting to a Windows or Samba Printer

Why buy a second printer when you can share the one you have? This tutorial will show you how to connect to and set up a printer that is shared from your Windows or Linux computer.

Educating the Open-source Community With Showmedo

Although as important as the software it supports, education and documentation are relatively neglected in the Open-source world. Coders love to code, and explaining how best to use or improve the software tends to be deferred or even sidelined.

At Showmedo we believe the community can play a vital role here and also say thanks for the tools and software that make our lives easier. If you have a piece of software you love or a programming langugage you are enthusiastic about, why not make a screencast showing others how to use it? All the stuff you wish you'd been told, the tips, tricks, insights that would have saved you time and frustration.

Screencasting is easier than you think, and we're happy to help you. You can emailus for advice or just use some of the how-to screencasts on the site. This screencasting learning-pathis a good place to start.

Kudos and Thanks for Bruce
