5-Minutes With Python [ID:098]

a series of video-tutorials by Ian Ozsvald

Targeted at those not familiar with Python or some of the really cool things it can do, this series provides in 5-minutes a concise description of the features and benefits of various frameworks, libraries and tools.

To keep it under 5-minutes, the talks are usually slide presentations. Buzzwords and prior knowledge requirements are kept to a minimum and explanations of why you would want to use these tools are provided. For those wanting more in-depth coverage, each 5-minute talk is paired with a longer talk, often presented as an interactive demonstration of the software.

Video Tutorials

1. Python and the Interactive Shell 'IPython'

A slideshow introduction to the enhanced interactive shell name IPython. Superior to the default Python shell, IPython provides power object introspection features, easy access to operating system commands and integrates with your text editor. If after viewing the slideshow, IPython looks like something you want to investigate further, check out my 5-talk series demonstrating how to use IPython. [...]

2. A Demonstration of ReStructuredText

A quick look at a style of marking up plaintext called ReStructuredText with hotkeys from the Emacs text editor to view the result as HTML, PDF and slides. ReStructuredText was developed in the Python community and is used for whitepapers, embedded markup for program source and wiki pages, and to rapidly create slide presentations.

3. Python and the Image Manipulation Library

A slideshow overview of the features of the widely used 2-d image manipulation package for Python named 'PIL', providing for the viewing, copying, printing, filtering and transformation of images, including palette manipulation, pixel filtering and multipage animations. The reStructuredText for these slides is available for study and reuse.

4. First 5 Minutes with Python

I'm often asked 'what are the resources and tutorials like for Python?' so here I try to answer the questions you might ask in your first 5 minutes with Python. First we look at's documentation and HOWTO section, then we move to my Python Resources for Newbies video at ShowMeDo to learn about on-line tutorials, newsgroups, news, download and community sites. This video is a part of [...]

Educating the Open-source Community With Showmedo

Although as important as the software it supports, education and documentation are relatively neglected in the Open-source world. Coders love to code, and explaining how best to use or improve the software tends to be deferred or even sidelined.

At Showmedo we believe the community can play a vital role here and also say thanks for the tools and software that make our lives easier. If you have a piece of software you love or a programming langugage you are enthusiastic about, why not make a screencast showing others how to use it? All the stuff you wish you'd been told, the tips, tricks, insights that would have saved you time and frustration.

Screencasting is easier than you think, and we're happy to help you. You can emailus for advice or just use some of the how-to screencasts on the site. This screencasting learning-pathis a good place to start.

Kudos and Thanks for Ian
