[004] The Perfect Cup of Coffee (1/1)

in series: Making The Perfect Cup Of Coffee

video tutorial by Ian Ozsvald

(Showmedo is undergoing major changes. To report any problems viewing the videos please email us and include browser and OS specifics. Cheers - Kyran.)

To paraphrase the great mathematician Paul Erdos, a geek is a machine for turning coffee into code. And by coffee we don't mean the instant muck, the similarity of which to real coffee starts and ends with the word coffee. Here at ShowMeDo we take coffee very seriously and, in this spirit, we present here a little demonstration from our resident coffee-mate Ian showing how to make a quite superb cup of coffee. Good evening. Be sincere; be brief; be seated.

I am from Ukraine and learning to write in English, tell me whether I wrote the following sentence: "Compare how to start a business in texas prices before you buy to make sure you get the best deal."

Best regards :-(, Salih.

Thank you very much. I tend to want the best of whatever I get into, and this is my first exposure to gourmet coffee brewing. I found your simple but easy to understand video just what I needed to see the 'how-to' of it.

I have now researched the best Bodum 12-ounze french press (at only $14.99 from Amazon) but the grinder is another issue. There seem to be so many, but nobody is saying which is best for the French press method. Could you recommend one or two you have had good luck with. Thank you.

Finally, is the use of cream or milk with gourmet coffee considered an abomination for the purist? I have yet to experience my first cup of the press pot brew you espouse, but I feel I have at last found the ultimate brew method after studying at the "I Need Coffee" website.

Thanks for any help you can offer with the grinder. I live in Iowa away from any city, so I will need a mailorder roaster as well.

Cheers and thanks again, David

Review of The Perfect Cup of Coffee

that was both funny and appropriate for the site!

my only criticism is: you didn't make nearly enough coffee. it's not a 'cup' of coffee unless it's > 16 oz. U.S.

;-)

Love it!!! You have shown yourself to be a true Leader of Geeks!

Hi Tom. I'm going to order my first batch of green beans next week with a plan to try wok/skillet roasting first of all.

I'm a complete convert to Ringtons in the centre of Brighton for their Fortissimo which I grind for espresso. They don't do Green Beans though, I checked yesterday :-(

Do you have a preferred supplier of green beans?

Ian.

You mention the freshness of the beans but omit to mention that green beans have an almost indefinite shelf life and in my experience you can't beat a cup made from freshly roasted. I concede that green beans are not readily available even from the midmarket traders but anyone who takes their caffeine seriously should recognise that beans start to go stale as soon as they're roasted. So start demanding your supplier goes bean green!

Hello Heinrich. I'm glad that you find our videos useful, and good to hear that you bought Robin's wxPython book. Let me know what other information you need?

Cheers,

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I contact you from old Germany. I'm a total beginner (Newbie) and will learn Python specially for my job in combination with CMS Plone.

Your tip:

Now that I have Noel and Robin's book it all seems easy...easily the best 20 pounds I've spent in months!

Please, can you give me more informations about this book - I will try to buy it here in Germany or order where ever.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Sorry about my bad english please.

Have a nice day.

Heinrich

The video is good but I don't agree with your technique. I perfer a 4 minute steep for the coffee as I believe it takes this long to really eek out the flavor. Also, you may want to try adding cold water into the beans while your coffee comes to a boil. Yes, this may cool down the temp a bit when you add the hot water, but I think it really matures the flavor.

Kudos and Thanks for Ian
